This is not a sequel to a cheesy 1950′s exploitation science fiction film that once played at drive ins throughout the United States. This the continuing story of Mexican astronauts who have been chosen by NASA to work on the famous, Space Shuttle.

Jose Hernandez, may have been the first Mexican in space, but he was not the last. The Second Mexican astronaut was Jose Hernandez. He was born in California of Mexican immigrant parents in 1962. Though born in the USA, he would spend half of each year in Mexico and half in the States. His parents were farmers and as a child he would help them in the fields of the farms they worked on in California. He would travel with them during this time to where the work was and as a result did not stay long enough at any particular school to learn English properly. It was not until he was 12 that he had developed a command of the language.

During high school, Jose participated in the excellent, Upward Bound, program. This program helped to prepare him for a successful life at college, something that may not have been possible without Upward Bound’s help. While attending the University of the Pacific, Jose excelled at mathematics, science and engineering. He eventually earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1984. In1986 he earned a Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California in Santa Barbara. Quite an inspiring accomplishment for someone who really didn’t have a formal education as a child.

Jose joined the Johnson Space Center, located in Houston Texas, in 2001. By May of 2004, he had been selected as a candidate for a trip into space. In 2006, Jose completed his Space Shuttle training and was re-stationed to NASA’s Shuttle Branch, which is located at the Kennedy Space Center. Jose’s big moment came on August 28, 2009, when he became the first Mexican in space. He also became the first person to use the Spanish language in space when he tweeted a message.
